Photography - Key Stage 5

Students who choose to study Photography at Key Stage 5 follow the Edexcel Photography A level course. 

Photography students are supported by excellent teaching staff who have an excellent record of student achievement in the subject. Teaching skills include Darkroom practice, technical camera skills, computer aided design and practical hand manipulation skills using art techniques. We have a well-equipped darkroom as well as professional photography backdrops and lights.

Course Content:

Students have 5 taught hours per week (plus independent study of 4 hours per week) during which they will complete the following:

  • Learn how to take interesting pictures and develop film,
  • Undertake controlled printing in the dark room
  • Use studio equipment as well as electronic imaging
  • Manipulation of photographs using artistic approaches and materials.
  • Explore projects/themes using the camera as their medium.
  • Complete research and analysis of artists and photographers work to inform their own ideas.

Assessment:

  • Personal Investigation worth 60% of the final grade:
    • Through the personal investigation students have the opportunity to generate and develop ideas, research primary and contextual sources, record practical and written observations, experiment with media and processes, and refine ideas towards producing personal resolved outcome(s).
  • An externally set assignment worth 40% of the final grade:
    • Students will complete preparatory studies followed by a 15-hour period of sustained focus under examination conditions during which they will produce their final piece of work
    • Preparatory studies will comprise a portfolio of practical and written development work based on the externally set assignment.

Apart from careers in the arts and teaching many students go on to further their studies in Photography by going on to Art Foundation courses or Photography degrees. Good photography skills will serve you well throughout a range of creative and related professions, including marketing, design, digital media and film making.
