Business Studies - Key Stage 5

Students who choose to study Business Studies at Key Stage 5 can choose to study either the AQA Business Studies A level or the AQA Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Applied Business courses.

Business Studies A level

The A level in Business Studies is taught and managed by experienced Business Studies specialist teachers with many contacts from the business world who often visit the school as guest speakers.

Course Content:

The following units of study are covered within the courses:

  • Year 12
    • Managers, leadership and decision-making.
    • Decision-making to improve performance – operational, financial and human.
  • Year 13
    • Analysing the strategic position of a business
    • Strategic methods

Assessment:

There are 3 written examinations taken at the end of the 2-year course, worth a third each of the final grade. Regular examination practise takes place throughout the course.

Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Applied Business

The Applied Business course is equivalent to one A level and gives students a broad introduction to the business and enterprise industry, with an emphasis on core knowledge and fundamental skills that are transferable across other sectors. The content has been developed in consultation with higher education providers to ensure that it supports progression. In addition, employers and professional bodies have been involved and consulted, to confirm the content is appropriate and consistent with current practice.

Course Content:

The following units of study are covered within the courses:

  • Financial planning
  • Business dynamics
  • Entrepreneurial opportunities
  • Management and leading people

Assessment:

The course consists of 6 units, of which 4 units are internally assessed controlled assessment projects and 2 units (50% of the total qualification) are externally set examinations – one at the end of Yr 12 and one at the end of Yr 13.

The requirements of the qualification will mean students develop transferable and higher order skills, which are highly regarded by higher education providers and employers. The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to admission requirements for many courses.

Studying Business Studies will give students the skills to be able to run their own business or develop the skills they will need to work in advertising, marketing, human resources, accountancy or the legal profession. Both courses also provide a pathway to studying Business at University.
