E-SAFETY

The comprehensive list of eSafety weblinks below is aimed at providing information and better awareness to students, teachers and parents of the issues relating to the use of the Internet, mobile phones and other ICT technologies.

Communication systems such as social networks, blogs, mobile phones and email have become increasingly important in our daily lives and often have important benefits but, as we all know, there are also risks to be considered and evaluated.

Access to the Internet can take place almost anywhere at anytime and it is important that students, teachers and parents are aware of the risks and know how to use modern technologies appropriately.We should be able to discuss issues in school, at home and between friends and know what actions to take when something goes wrong.

The websites below provide a comprehensive list of links and information about online safety so parents, and their children, can decide what is right for their family when using the Internet and associated technologies.

E-SAFETY WEBSITES 

Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP)
“CEOP works with child protection partners across the UK and overseas to identify the main threats to children and coordinates activity against these threats to bring offenders to account. CEOP protects children from harm online and offline, both directly and in partnership with local and international agencies.” Click on the link if you or somebody you know of has been, or may be, the victim of on-line harassment, bullying or exploitation.

Internet Watch Foundation (IWF)
Click on the link if you have discovered any offensive websites or obscene content on the internet. The Internet Watch Foundation has the power to shut these sites down. To minimise the availability of potentially criminal internet content specifically:

  • Child sexual abuse content* hosted anywhere in the world.
  • Criminally obscene adult content hosted in the UK.
  • Non-photographic child sexual abuse images hosted in the UK

CEOP Education
CEOP Education/Think U Know is an important website that is aimed at children and their parents/carers to educate all concerned about the potential dangers and risks that currently exist on the internet. It is an important aspect of modern life that parents and carers are aware of exactly what their children have posted online, what security risks there are and also what site their children are visiting. Please click on the link and spend some time watching the video clips and resources therein.

ChildLine
Childline offers help and advice to children who are worried, concerned or at risk in any way. If you would like to contact an impartial person to discuss any issues that you may be finding difficult, please click on the link above or ring the number shown.

MIND
Click on the link if you would like to make contact with an impartial person to speak to if you, or someone you know of, may be feeling depressed, anxious or suffering from any sort of mental illness.

Talk to FRANK
FRANK helps you find out everything you might want to know about drugs (and some stuff you don’t). For friendly, confidential advice, Talk to FRANK. Click on the link if you have any queries, or are concerned about anyone, in relation to drug, alcohol and substance abuse.

A non-profit making organisation working directly with children, parents and teachers to ensure that the issues of online child protection and children’s safe and positive use of the internet are addressed. Childnet International produce an online CD guide specifically for parents KnowITAll - www.childnet-int.org/kia/

Get Safe Online
A beginners guide to using the Internet safety, including a quiz and some video tutorials about how to ‘stay safe’ on-line.

Bullying advice & support
One in five young people have experienced bullying by text or via social networks. This website gives advice for children and parents on bullying plus lots of other useful information through Family Lives.co.uk. 

Comparitech Chat Safety 

Need help navigating the online chat world with your child? Find out about the potential dangers and how to help children use digital platforms safely.

Digital Parenting
Vodafone have developed this website in conjunction with mumsnet. It is very accessible and provides information and guidance to parents with understanding their child’s digital world and get more involved. There is even an on-line test to see how much you know!

Lots of guidance and articles for parents about keeping their children safe online.
